RWANDA : Espoir for B-ball tourney in Kenya

Rwanda’s reigning champions, Espoir basketball club have been invited for the inaugural GJ (Dr. George Jones) sports medical center tournament scheduled for February 13-16 at Nyayo indoor stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
News of the invite was confirmed by Espoir head coach Jean Bahufite on Friday. He said his team will start preparations today.
Doctor George Jones, based in Dubai, on Friday launched his entry into Africa more specifically in Kenya by unveiling his ‘transform minimally invasive surgery center’ in Africa that will be based in Nairobi.
At the same occasion, he officially announced the 2014 GJ club basketball tournament for East Africa that will attract 16 men and women’s teams.
Nyamirambo-based Espoir were invited following their superb performance in two consecutive seasons where they won two league and play-offs titles respectively, suffering just a single defeat all season and finishing unbeaten a season before.
They also won one Fiba Africa Zone V championship title in 2012 and were beaten in the final of last year’s edition by Burundi’s Urunani in August in Bujumbura.
The winner of the tournament will pocket Ksh500.000 (approximated Rwf3.5m).
National league to start on Feb 22
The 2014 league is scheduled to kick-off on February 22 if the Rwanda basketball federation (Ferwaba) general assembly approves the calendar when the general assembly sits this coming Sunday at the federation’s headquarters at Amahoro stadium.
Apart from approving the new calendar, the general assembly will also talk about the issue of legal status for league participants, the entry of new clubs in the league and looking for league sponsors among others.
