Kenyatta University’s Pirates beat Saints from Athi- River 66 – 39 to remain unbeaten in the Nairobi Basketball Association (Div 2) on Saturday afternoon at the Railways Sports Club.
The match started with some drama when Saints’ point guard Richard Muisyo was denied the chance to play due to lack of proper identification. In the end the NBA officials were called in and it was decided that Muisyo could not play till the next match when he gets the proper documents.
Pirates who began the match at a high note thumped in a total of 18 points against Saints 10 points. Saints could not keep up in the second quarter with Pirates’ speed and they slumped managing only 4 points against their opponent’s 19 points to put the total scores at 37 – 14 at half time.
The 3rd quarter saw Pirates’ frustrate Saints more and they thrashed the visibly exhausted side 22 points to 9 points. The 4th quarter saw Saints stage a comeback when they beat KU with a 7 point margin the scores being 19 – 6 but it was little too late with the results witnessed in the previous quarters.
Mike Ngungi helped KU to 22 points while Renson Moibi gave his side 14 points. Simon Kaikai stood out for Saints with 18 points.
Speaking to Michezoafrika.com after the match, Pirates tactician Martin Muindy praised his side’s performance citing endurance as their main strength: “We have a secret and that is running. As a side we have dedicated to speed and endurance and that has worked for our advantage to add on that we play basic basketball."
Saints captain Michael Mwanza was forced to retract his pre-match bravado by conceding defeat citing fitness as a major hurdle for the team: “We were unfit and that showed in our recovery but we are going to work on that before the next match. The loss of Richard our point guard was also a major hit to our side but I know we shall recover,”
KU are set to face their neighbors JKUAT's Juja campus in the Thika Road derby on Sunday afternoon.
