UGANDA : Warriors force Game 5 against depleted UCU

Warriors have numerous match winners but Sam Gombya was the unlikeliest last man standing against UCU Canons on Saturday night.

Gombya scored 16 points and six rebounds to give Warriors a 105-95 victory in double overtime and force a decisive Game Five tomorrow in this pulsating MTN-Fuba League semifinal series. He only came on in overtime because the former champions were left with no options as both benches wore thin.
UCU finally paid for their thinness, finishing the game with only three players – Sande Okot, Sudi Ulanga and Geoffrey Omondi (19 points) – all guards. Michael Kariuki, Brian Gumisiriza, Ivan Enabu, Henry and Eric Malinga fouled out too for Warriors.
“This was crazy,” Warriors coach Mandy Juruni said. “Never seen anything like this.”
Both teams finished the four periods at 72-up as the jittery university side squandered a five-point lead (72-67) heading into the final minute. Enabu, scoring a game-high 27 points for his best figures of the series, perfected four on the line to pull within one. UCU lost the edge when Ulanga missed two from the foul line thereafter. Kariuki also did the same with six seconds on the clock despite celebrating before his attempts.

Henry, 23 points and 15 rebounds, gave Kariuki reprieve and punished the crowd, largely partisan for the underdogs, by nailing one. Overtime had arrived. That became the Gombya show to separate the drained sides. The tallest and fans’ favourite did with two slam dunks.
Without inside players Jachin Wettstone (13-10), Martin Okwako (14-9), Naftary Msogoti (7-7) and Desmond Owili (3), ejected earlier, UCU were helpless. The knee injury centre Robert Ogweno suffered last Wednesday haunted them. “I hope he can play soon,” UCU coach Nick Natuhereza said.
Players and fans were understandably sapped. No team has won subsequent games.
