KENYA : Otula to challenge Aluanga for Fiba presidency

By CAXTON APOLLO

Fiba-Africa Zone Five president Morris Aluanga will be challenged by a fellow Kenyan, Paul Otula, in the forthcoming delegates elections to be held in Nairobi.

Otula, Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) chairman, said National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) had given him the nod to vie for the Zone Five president’s post.
Aluanga was elected to the position by virtue of having been KBF chairman between 1999 and 2002.
The Fiba-Africa secretariat will set the election date where other Zone Five member countries – Djibouti, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Uganda – will take part, Otula said.

Provisional squad

At the same time, KBF has named a provisional squad of 43-strong national team players – 19 girls and 24 boys – to represent Kenya in this year’s Africa Under-18 Championship in Rwanda and Egypt.

Otula said the two teams earned automatic qualification to represent Zone Five in the continental event after they failed to get opponents in the elimination round matches in Nairobi in April.

The KBF boss said training dates will be announced later. It will be Kenya’s second appearance in the continental championship, having been last without a win in the boys’ event in Egypt and eighth in the girls’ category in Tunisia in 2008.
