THE Kyambogo Warriors might have qualified for the playoffs but they are still serious about the league, writes Charles Mutebi.

Sunday at YMCA, the Warriors recorded their seventh straight league win with an 82-69 defeat of the Nkumba Marines to go top of the men’s first division.

The win, secured by typical performances from Ronnie Kasewu (17 points), Steven Okias (14) and Abdullahi Ramadan (13), took Kyambogo past D’Mark Power in first position. But Power have a game in hand.

The Warriors lead Power, with whom they are locked in the battle for the regular season and the perk of playing fourth in the playoffs semifinals by just one point. This is perhaps why the Warriors are not ready to switch off yet. Not so, if you ask Warriors coach Gad Etau.

“That (winning the regular season) is not my ambition,” Etau argued. “My ambition is to take every game as it comes because if you say you want to meet this team in the playoffs and you don’t, you are caught off-guard.”

Should the Warriors go into the post season as the top seed, chances are high they’ll meet Nkumba. Marines have lost their last two league matches but are still in line for fourth place.

With their dynamic duo of Julius Lutwama and Phillip Wakimwero, who netted a game-high 26 and 16 points respectively, the Marines are bound to return to winning ways soon.
