Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) is counting on professional Stephen Omony to help the national team make an impact at the Africa Championship Zone 5 qualifiers due February 23 – March 1 in Kigali. The tournament brings together teams from Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan, Djibouti and hosts Rwanda.

The Seychelles-based Omony is expected in the country on Sunday and will have about five days to train with the team before they depart for Rwanda on February 21. “We have finalised his travel arrangements and are just waiting for him,” Fuba assistant general secretary, Joseph Manano said yesterday.
Omony, a former national league two-time most valuable player, is the only one to have been selected on the 12-man team without undergoing trials.

Some players, including Ivan Enabu and Eric Malinga were dropped despite training with the team for over a month. “Omony’s potential can’t be questioned. He is very talented and his experience will be vital for the team,” Manano added.

The former Falcons star has been given a shooting guard’s role and is expected to compete for a place with team captain Norman Blick. This is what prompted the technical committee to drop the dazzling Enabu. “We could only accommodate Enabu as a shooting guard. But then he can’t replace Blick or Omony,” Manano noted.
