Power Basketball Club centre player David Kiberu has failed to make the final men’s team of 12 set to compete in the Africa Championship Zone 5 qualifiers that gets underway tomorrow at Amahoro stadium, Kigali.

Kiberu, who won last year’s league championship with Power, was dropped in favour of the inexperienced seven-foot tall Sam Gombya.

“The coach told me I have no place on the team, it’s disappointing,” Kiberu said after watching the team record an impressive 93-68 victory over Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono Canons in their last warm-up match at Lugogo on Friday night.

Also dropped are Moses Olobo (Kampala International University) and Miracles’ Moses Otem.

The trio’s absence was though hardly felt as the team displayed a classy performance with professional Stephen Omony sinking in a game high 25 points for his team to subdue UCU Canons, who had Geofrrey Omondi lead the team’s charts with 15 points.

National team skipper Norman Blick had 13 points and Joseph Ikong added 12, but Henry Malinga managed only seven. Ivan Enabu and Ken Roti were the other high scorers for UCU Canons with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The women’s team also recorded an 80-45 win against a select side. The teams are set to leave by road this morning but two more players from each team could be dropped due to financial constraints.
“We’ve told the coaches to cut the number of players to 10 because of the financial situation. We have also requested the hosts to allow us arrange private accommodation and transport as a way of cutting costs,”
Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) president Ambrose Tashobya, said.

Men’s team: Ben Komakech, Francis Tumusime, Norman Blick (captain), Ronnie Kasewu, Stephen Omony, Joseph Ikong, Isaac Lugudde, Boniface Okello, Phillip Wakimwero, Henry Malinga, Brian Ssentongo and Sam Gombya.

Women’s team: Flavia Oketcho, Angela Namirimu, Becky Akullo, Olivia Mulwana, Sima Monica, Kassim Hatima, Vicky Nassolo, Mariam Birungi, Ali Mavita (captain), Frances Nabulobi, Miriam Hamala and Kiiza Elizabeth.
