TANZANIA : Union Basketball set for April

By Renatha Msungu

Union basketball club championship gets underway at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam on April 26, the Tanzania Basketball Federation`s secretary general, Lawrence Cheyo, confirmed yesterday.

The championship would involve Mainland and Isles teams that have excelled in their respective leagues.

The league would be preceded by Mainland championship that takes off on April 12 in Dar es Salaam.

The Union league will be staged to determine club champions for international representation, so says Cheyo.
``It`s important for the teams wishing to compete to embark on training sessions ahead of the showdown,`` said Cheyo.
Cheyo mentioned teams expected to compete in the Mainland league as ABC, JKT, Savio, Oilers, Magereza, Polisi Dar, Vijana, Dodoma Spurs, Mbeya Flames, Kilimanjaro Boys, Mwanza Planet, Bees and Young Warriors.

The TBF secretary responded with disappointment as a result of Tanzania failing to send a team in the Africa zonal championship that gets under way in Kigali on February 25 for lack of funds.

This is the third time Tanzania are no show to the continental tourney.
