SEYCHELLES : Mauritius friendly tournament - Golden outing for Premium Cobras

IT has been a perfect outing for local basketball team Premium Cobras, who won the gold medal in a friendly tournament in Mauritius. Shooting guard Darren Lesperance was also named the Most Valuable Player. The Cobras left Seychelles on December 4 and returned last Saturday night after making a clean sweep of their Mauritian opponents.

Third in the Men’s division one league, Premium Cobras won all their matches against the Mauritian under-23 national selection, Real and Attila basketball clubs. The matches were played at the Phoenix Gymnasium in Quatre Bornes and the Quorum in Rose-Hill.

They were also challenged by the Barkley basketball team and won the match-up.
Speaking to Sports Nation, Premium Cobras’ club president Roy Collie said it has been a fruitful outing for them as this was the fifth consecutive time they had taken part in the tournament.
“We took the matches seriously even though it was a friendly tournament. The Mauritius under-23 selection, who are preparing for the 2011 Indian Ocean Islands Games, gave a good performance. We expect them to be in good shape in 2011,” said Mr Collie.

He Collie added that the Premium Cobras team were invited to a cocktail reception by new Mauritian sports minister, who was present at all of their games.

They also took the opportunity to meet representatives from the Mauritian sports ministry and the Mauritius Basketball Federation.

He said Premium Cobras will be ready to compete in local competitions next year.
