14th Champions Cup for women: KPA suffered its first loss against CSA 53 - 63

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) today lost their first Africa Champions Cup for women game when they were fell 53-63 to CSA of Core d' Ivoire in Day 4 game of Goup B played at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

A dramatic collapse by the porters in the last 3:00 minutes caused them a clear win as they were leading 52-48 on a basket by Everlyne Akoth. Four costly turnovers by Mwajuma Suleiman, Caroline Arato, Joyce Mwakungu and Irene Murambi did KPA in.

The players who fed on those blunders were Kolga Asstou and Mariam Kouyate who costed for the winning points for CSA as the crowd and coach Anthony Ojukwu wondered what really went wrong so late in the game.

That sad loss, now means that KPA are now third and will face off against the second team from pool A in the quarters.

CSA took a 2-0 lead when Asstou hit a basket after another early Mwajuma turn over. But KPA battled hard on the efforts by Yvonne Akinyi to take a 16-12 first quarter advantage.

The Kenyans continued that surge in the second quarter as this closely fought and entertaining tie went back and fourth to the delight of small crowd. KPA trailed 27-28 at the break.

After resumption, Akoth sunk a basket, but Kouyate answered with a three as CSA locked the scores 31-31. Agnes Anyango free shots made it 37-38 but she fumbled thereafter as CSA went up 41-38. Akinyi attoned for the blunder off a Makungu miss for a 42-41 KPA lead as the buzzer sounded for the end of the quarter.

Makungu made it 44-41 from restart but never say die CSA charged again locking the scores 48-48 and 52-52. Makungu fumbled and CSA raced the other end of the court for a basket by the hard working Asstou. She had it 55-52 and the losers never recovered the rest of the way.

Ironically it was Makungu who led his team charges with 14 points while Akinyi nailed 14 and Anyango bagged nine for KPA. For the victors, Kouyatte Kani led the rout with 18 points while Asstou registered 14.
