UGANDA : Ugandan Girls One Win Away From Place in Continental Championship

by Sande Bashaija

Uganda will for the first time have a team at the Africa Junior Championships due October in Egypt if the girls hold off Kenya in a second leg game at Lugogo Indoor Stadium tomorrow evening.
The Ugandans rallied from a ten-point deficit, forcing Kenya to a 47-all draw in the first game at Lugogo on Tuesday evening. Draws in basketball are very rare but the ongoing Zone 5 tournament attracted only two teams, implying they had to decide the winner over two games.
"Let every Ugandan come here on Friday and give the team support. We are almost there," Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) president Ambrose Tashobya said.
Nabisunsa's Mariam Tamale came off the bench in fourth quarter and her fast dribbles and dishes troubled the Kenyan defence. She collected a quick eight points but the home crowd had to bite their fingers in the last five seconds as the Kenyans squandered a chance to snatch a one-point victory from the charity line.
Halima Nabusimba led Uganda with 11 points while Aisha Nakabubi added eight. Purity Odhiambo (15) and Mildred Olumasi (12) led the Kenyans on the score sheet.
The Ugandan boys have no chance of making it to Egypt, having lost to Rwanda 100-83 on Tuesday. They face Sudan this evening in hope of registering victory.
