KENYA : League champions and leaders KCB entertain Strathmore at Nyayo gym

By Dann O’werre

NATIONAL champions and leaders Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Lions battle Strathmore University in a Premier League basketball tie at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium this afternoon.
The bankers, who have roared to the top of the chart in their best start in years, are unbeaten in four matches.

They should continue their sterling run against the Blades who have bagged four points from one win and two losses.
Tobias Onyango, Eric Omari, Dennis Opiyo and Victor Odendo should prove a handful for the students whose coach, Tony Ochieng, promised six wins in the first leg. However, they have only beaten Java Warriors. It will be real test for Ken Maru and Paul Nyakinda.
International Christian Centre (ICC), shut out 79-62 by Kisumu Lakeside last weekend, will have to be at their best against Kenyatta University (KU) who lost to Lions 57-72. In Adams Njoroge, Emmanuel Ekai and Vito Khote, ICC have players who can deliver.
Tomorrow, former champions Co-operative Bank of Kenya return to meet ICC in a game they are well placed to win. Cliff Ochieng, George Kamau and Horace Nyadera should lead the bankers who are second in the table standings with five points from three games.
KU’s Griffin Ligare and Paul Dinga were in sparkling form when they guided the side to a 58-55 win over rivals University of Nairiobi Terrorists.

Whether they repeat feat against Abel Nson and United States International University (USIU) remains to be seen.
Last year’s play-off finalists Usiu women are without a win and are having it rough after two matches so far. They tackle on-form Sprite Storms who have played three matches, winning all, and are lying second after Eagle Wings who have eight points.

Evlyne Norah has taken the scoring Flames’ responsibility in her hands, but against Storms she will find Angela Luchivya, Emma Nyakweba and Carl Ouma battling her.

In the lower division, Blazers’ quest for top spot will be tested today as they confront Lomboritz in what should be a close fight. Both teams are playing well and have proved they will be gunning for nothing short of the top league next year.
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology have a date with struggling Africa Nazarene University who have lost all their matches. They also play Nairobi Pentecostal Church in their second match of nine matches on card.
