NATIONAL Basketball League women's champions Kampala City Council (KCC) Leopards are to sign Makerere University Sparks duo Marion Nakaziba and Carol Nantalo ahead of the new season.

The transfer window opened on Monday and the two star players have already picked forms from the basketball governing body Fuba.

"We are soon finalizing everything. The players have already agreed personal terms and what remains is clearance from Sparks managers," KCC Leopards team manager Joy Olinga told Daily Monitor yesterday.

"The girls have played together for a long time and will add muscle to our team. It's not easy defending a championship and that's why we are strengthening our squad," Olinga added.

The departure of the duo comes as a heavy blow to 2003 champions Sparks, who are trying to re-build after failing to make play-offs last season. They have also lost Vicky Nassolo to Kampala International University (KIU) Rangers.

"I finished university and have to forge a way forward. The KCC management promised to get me a job somewhere and I can't let the chance pass," Nantalo, who is commonly referred to as Baby in basketball circles, said.

According to the deal, KCC Leopards will sponsor the former Sparks captain Nakaziba for further studies after she graduated from Makerere.

The MTN sponsored league begins in April.
