UGANDA : Clubs Want MTN Money

Kampala City Council (KCC) Leopards, Mogas Falcons and A-1 Challenge are up in arms against the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) over prize money due to them for emerging victorious in last year's league.

KCC Leopards are the women's champions after beating A-1 Challenge while Falcons took the men's trophy. "I can't believe we are yet to receive our prize money yet the season is soon beginning. The money is ours but I wonder why they (Fuba) are not giving it to us," KCC treasurer Denis Karugaba told Daily Monitor yesterday.

According to Karugaba, league sponsors MTN released the money last month and there is no reason Fuba should be holding onto it.

The champions are entitled to Shs2m each and first runners-up Shs1m. Clubs argue they need the money to re-build their teams ahead of the 2008 league that gets underway in early April. "I have inquired about the money for some time now. But I won't give up because the club needs it," A-1 Challenge treasurer Ali Mavita said.

"Of course teams would use such money to bring in some recruits. I think Fuba has sincerely delayed," Falcons' Henry Malinga said. Fuba official Joe Burua says preparations are underway to handover the money to the clubs.
