UGANDA : Gulu Hawks Decry Lack of Funds

GULU Hawks registered a slim 72-71 win over Crane High School in Game One of the best of three semi-final play-off series earlier in the week, but their hopes of returning to the topflight are slowly fading.

The Gulu giants are cash-strapped and may not honour the remaining two semi-final games. "Fuba's (Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations) decision to have all play-off games in Kampala is unfair. It is absolutely impossible for us to get funds to sustain us through this stage," Hawks' captain Denis Akena lamented his worries to Daily Monitor at Lugogo on Wednesday.

Relegated last season, the Hawks can return to topflight if they beat Crane High in the semis. KCC Lions and Vegetarian are the other contenders but only finalists will be promoted.

"I think we may forfeit the finals even if we make it. Since its best of five, there is no way we can travel to Kampala on five occasions," Akena remarked. "We don't have a sponsor and Fuba should be considerate." Akena said they had written to Fuba but were yet to receive a reply.

"If possible let them (Fuba) give us some money for at least three trips since they are supposed to send referees to Gulu every time we have a home game," the lethal guard said.
