KENYA : To face Nigeria in Africa competition

Kenya has been placed in a tough pool ‘B’ for the Africa women’s basketball championships to be held in Senegal in September.

According to the draws released by Fiba Afrique, the Kenya women, who are currently preparing for the Algiers All Africa Games, will battle with Nigeria, Congo DR, Angola, Cameroon and Cape Verde Islands for a ticket to the final four.

Pool ‘A’ has Senegal, Mozambique, Tunisia, Cote D Ivoire, Mali and Madagascar.

Kenya start their campaign with a tough match against Angola on September 21, the same day hosts Senegal will have a date with Cote d’Ivoire in the opening group ‘A’ match.

Other group ‘A’ matches programmed for the day are Mali against Tunisia and Madagascar versus Mozambique while group B matches to be played on the day are Nigeria against Cameroon and Cape Verde v Congo DR.

Arrival

Kenya play their next game against Cape Verde on September 22, before taking on Cameroon on September 23, Congo DR on September 25 before winding up their preliminary rounds with a match against Nigeria on September 26.

Meanwhile, US-based Kenya player Josephine Achieng Owino wil link up with the team preparing for the Algiers Games.

The former Mombasa High School forward, a first team regulra at Union University in the US, arrives in the country on June 19.

Speaking to the Daily Nation on telephone from Tennessee, Owino said she had decided to return and play for her country despite the busy schedule in the US and predicted.

“It was a very difficult decision to make because we are quite busy at Union while our practices for the coming season are due in July,” she said.
