CAMEROON : Need to Create More Clubs

By Fred Vubem

This will make the championship more competitive and increase chances of detecting talents.
Though there are basketball clubs all over the country, most of them are based in the metropolitan cities of Douala and Yaounde. This accounts for the domination of clubs from Douala and Yaounde in the national championship and cup. Therefore in order to increase the level of play and increase the chances of detecting young talents in basketball, there is need for more clubs to be created.Contrary to football where the elite championship is played all over the country, basketball clubs begin their competition within the province and only the best from each province qualify for the national championship. Provinces like the Far North, North, Adamawa, North West, South West and East with few or no basketball clubs are no rival to provinces like the Centre and Littoral where there are over thirty clubs. An increase in the number of clubs in the other provinces would consequently lead to an increase in the number of matches a club has to play before confronting representatives of the other provinces. This will not only better prepare the team for the national championship and cup, but also improve on the quality of the game in Cameroon. Also, it would give an opportunity for many more youths to practise the game and thereby improve their talent.

Similarly, creating more clubs will get more communities interested in the game. Sports associations or clubs are known to be a communal belonging. That is why people from a specific area usually convert to be the supporters of the club from their area or which bears the name of their company or region. Hence, it will contribute in popularising the game in Cameroon.
