NIGERIA : Zenith League: Blue Angels Beat Custom, Qualify

The battle of league leaders was fought yesterday in Asaba in Game 8 of the Equatorial Conference in the Zenith Female Basketball League as the Nigeria Customs engaged the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels certainly had more than enough help from above as they over powered the Customs and their defenses with a 54-40 victory.
The game played on the fourth day of the championship was advertised as the one to decide the leadership structure and it turned out so as the victory has given the Blue Angels the number position for that zone. The Blue Angels are the second team of the First Bank's Elephant Girls squad.
The Custom coach Scott Nnaji told reporters after the game yesterday that he was okay with the position of his team.
"The important is to qualify for the final plays and that is our concern. Whether we finish first or second here is purely secondary. At the play off in Lagos we'll meet again and everyone has the real opportunity to take the best position," Nnaji said.
The game was the most highly contested in the tournament so far. The result has given the Blue Angels a berth for the Lagos final even with one game at hand. The other team to the final from this zone would be determined today when the Customs face the Sunshine Angels of Akure. Both team have won two games and lost one each to the same Blue Angels. The winner of their clash automatically gets the second direct slot to the finals.
Just as the Blue ladies celebrated yesterday, the Dodan Amazons smiled also as they secured their first victory. They defeated Edo Queens 52-51 in the battle of the under dogs. The result also means that the Edo team could leave Asaba without winning a game. The only game left for them is against the league leaders, Blue Angels and would take more than miracle to beat the Angels.
