NIGERIA : Playoff: Peaks, Potters off to a good start

The Savannah conference leg of the 2006 Vmobile premier league playoffs got off to a good start Friday at the sports hall of Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna with Plateau Peaks basketball club of Jos and Niger Potters basketball club of Minna recording their first win.

Plateau Peaks, with inspiration from the duo of Stanley Gumut who was later adjudged the most valuable player of the match and Job nelson put up a five-star performance against Kano Pillars basketball club wining three of the four quarters the encounter lasted.

The Peaks was a delight to watch on a weather friendly afternoon with good ball handling and terrific three-point shots from Nelson who played as both point guard and shooting guard wining the first quarter 21-16 points and extended the lead in the second quarter which ended 28-20 points but surrendered the third quarter 15-18 but such effort was not good enough to save the day for the Kano team who missed most of its shots from the line.

The fourth quarter was played on a more relaxed note by the Jos players who were sure that the encounter is as good as being won and lost, ending the quarter 20-18 for a cummulative scoreline of 86-72 points.

The day's second game between Niger Potters and Bauchi Nets was more dramatic as the Nets played the encounter without a bench.

Though gaining the sympathy of the fans who cheer them ceaselessly but that could not save them from the hands of the Potters players who purnished their gut for daring to keep the gain within a digit difference all through the first three quarters (54-47) as at the close of the third quarter of (19-16), (22-19) and (13-12).

On resumption of the fourth quarter it was Potters all the way as the five-man Nets team could not match the Potters stamina for stamina losing by a whopping 32 points margin of 87-55 points of (33-09).

Action continues today at the same venue with two matches billed for the day, as the two losing teams of Friday Bauchi Nets take on Kano Pillars at 2pm while Peaks and Potters will attempt outwitting one another when they go each other throat in an encounter dubbed the star-match of today.
