ZIMBABWE : BUZ fails to secure sponsor

By Paul Munyuki

THE Basketball Union of Zimbabwe executive have failed to secure sponsorship for the National League that started at the weekend and up to now the clubs do not even know what they are playing for.

Last year the National League was sponsored by Delta through their Sprite brand but nothing has been communicated to the basketball mother body. A BUZ official confirmed that they do not have a sponsor for the most prestigious basketball tournament in Zimbabwe. "Schools are better off, they have a sponsor in almost every sporting discipline but the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe have not communicated to the clubs on their position. "At the moment the clubs do not even know what they are playing for and this leaves a lot of doubt in the clubs and they don’t know if they will get their travel expenses. "BUZ should just communicate to the clubs so that they know where they are standing," said the official. Cameo started their championship defence in style when both their men and women’s sides proceeded to the quarter-finals. Giants were the only men’s team from Bulawayo that made it for the quarter-finals as the other seven teams — Cameo, Jewels, Kingdom Cavaliers, Celtics, Pross, Mufakose Hawks and Varsity Leopards — are from Harare. Cameo men dismissed Kingdom Cavaliers (48-39), walloped Highlanders (85-10) and Classics (63-34) to book their place in the quarter-finals. The women’s side also qualified for the same stage after they beat UZ Stars 59-12 at Richwood Park in Harare. Quarterfinals Men: Cameo v Pross; Jewels v Mufakose Hawks; Celtics v Kingdom Cavaliers; Giants v Varsity Leopards. Women: Cameo v Midlands State University; Varsity Leopards v Highlanders; Queens v UZ Stars; Giants v Jewels.
