NIGERIA : Marella Wins Private School B/ball Tourney

Marella International School has won the maiden edition of basketball championship for private secondary schools Ibadan, as they defeated Lead City Secondary schools by 19 to 17 in a final match played inside indoor sports hall of Liberty Stadium Ibadan. The basketball tournament which was organized by the zonal coordinator of Federal Ministry of Sports and Social Development zone one Mr. Peter Nelson as a pilot study begins on 3rd and ended on the 13th of this month.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State Alhaji Mudashiru Ayandeji who represented Governor Alao Akala at the final of the ceremony commended the standard of the competition, while he reiterated in his speech the commitment of the present administration to revive school sports which has been moribund in this recent time, urging private school to include sports in their school curriculum.

While speaking in the same vein, the proprietor of the winning side, Marella, Mr. Edward Adebisi expressed his happiness to FMSSD the organizer of the tourney for remembering private schools in their programmes this time around; the sector he claimed had suffered too much neglect in hands of government.

" Participation of school athletes in the sporting programmes should be accorded high priority in all private secondary schools because there is too much emphasize and attention on public schools when it comes to schools sports" Adebisi noted adding that private schools gives sporting activities more priority in their schools curriculum.

"It would be noted that majority of our international athletes are product of school sports programme hence our participation in sporting competitions had immense value in promoting the physical. Social and emotional development of our kids status". He enthused.
