NIGERIA : High School Kids get set for Milo Conference finals

For secondary schools all over Nigeria, the season for exciting basketball action as the 2007 Nestle Milo Secondary School Championship conference playoffs get underway in Kano from June 1.

The championship which has for over seven years been one of the biggest platforms for the discovery of young and promising basketball talents among high school students in Nigeria began this year in March with the intra-state preliminaries.

According to beverage giant manufacturer’s Group Brand Manager Banji Okubote, this year’s competition promises to be more exciting given the determination to excel exhibited by the participating schools during the state play-off stages.



He confirmed that the Savanna conference final is to hold at the sports hall of the Kano Township Stadium otherwise known as the Sani Abacha Stadium from June 1 to 5 in the boys and girls category with champions of Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto and hosts Kano State battleing for the conference sole ticket to the grand finale billed for later in the year.

The Sahara conference final scheduled to hold at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi will hold from June 6 to 10 with winners from Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Taraba, Gombe and Adamawa States fighting for honours.

At the Central conference finals due to hold in Abuja from June 11 through 15, seven states are expected to feature. They include Plateau, Nassarawa, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger State and the FCT
(Abuja).

The Sports Council in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State will come alive when states champion from Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Abia, and host Bayelsa state take to the court for who goes through to the finals from June 16 to 20 in the Central conference.

Atlantic conference finals scheduled for the sports hall of the Asaba Township Stadium between June 21 and 25 will feature leading teams from Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo and the fiercely competitive Edo and Delta State teams.

The last of the conference finals will be that of the Western conference holding in Ile-Ife, Osun State from June 26 and July 2 will feature champions from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo State.

The six (male) conference Most Valuable Players (MVPs) will be sponsored to the 2nd Milo/NBA Top 50 Camp to further expose them to the rudiment of the game.
