ZAMBIA: ZDPA Withdraws Sponsorship From Basketball League

TWO teams in the Zambia Dairy Processors Association (ZDPA)-sponsored Basketball Association of Zambia (BAZ) league have withdrawn from the league.

BAZ general secretary Major Richard Kachingwe yesterday said Hawks and Kafue Natives had not confirmed their participation in the 2006 season and had so far missed out on the opening two league matches.

Hawks, previously known as Premium Hawks with sponsorship from the Zambia State Insurance Corporation (ZISC), have failed to come up with a full team for the season while Natives have just been quiet.

Maj Kachingwe said the Hawks, one of the longest running teams in the league, had lost players to Lusaka Kings resulting in their failure to put together a strong team to challenge for honours.
Natives on the other hand have only been in the league for the past two seasons and for the good part of the season played with just enough players to form a starting team but without substitutes.

Maj Kachingwe said former national champions Heroes Play United have changed their name to News Perfect Direct Heroes, indicating the name of the team's new sponsors.

He said a new team, Maamba Coal Stars from Maamba was trying to join the league and that final paper work was being done. Meanwhile, the BAZ league teams will play their week three and four league matches this Friday and Sunday in Lusaka at the National Sports Development Centre.
